April 1, 2009

There is a lot in the works right now at Halcyon, in partnership with two of Nashville’s finest community organizations, the Oasis Center and Team Green. We have collaborated our energies to start the Halcyon Bike Workshop, a co-operative bicycle shop that will be located at the Oasis Center’s awesome new facility on Charlotte Pike, near downtown.

Most major cities have bike co-ops, and several co-ops have been attempted in Nashville, but have not survived for the long run. When planning Halcyon, Seth, Andrew and I felt strongly that a community workshop was needed to nurture Nashville’s growing bike culture. The Workshop will provide free bicycles to Nashville’s youth, as well as a full repair shop and classes for the kids to learn bicycle mechanics. Using the “earn-a-bike” model of many co-ops, we hope that the Workshop kids will be eager to pass their knowledge onto other youth. The Workshop is set to open at the end of May.

Though the Workshop will only be open to youth in its first incarnation, we hope it is the beginning of something bigger. The Workshop will begin small, as we do a test run of the program this summer with a couple dozen Nashville youth. But we have big plans and hope that at summer’s end, the Workshop will begin to grow into a community resource.

So, with having said all of that…
