To top off a pretty amazing week, the shop is featured in the November issue of Nylon Magazine. Pretty rad. We are included in a spread on Nashville, with fellow local gems, like Nashville’s Dead, Local Honey, Infinity Cat and Mas Tacos, to name just a few. You could say it is kind of like a yearbook- and we are so honored to be included!

Read our article after the jump, or pick up a copy to read all about our dear city…

Yeah, we are still pretty excited around here about the big announcement yesterday that the Bike Workshop won a $100,000 grant from Humana. The Nashville Scene did a nice write up for us- check it out!

WOW!

What a way to begin a week. This morning, I woke up with butterflies in my stomach. This was a highly anticipated day- the  Bike Workshop, the non-profit bicycle program we run with our friends at the  Oasis Center, was one of three finalists in a $100,000 grant being offered by Humana, and the winner was to be announced. We gathered together in downtown Nashville, completely humbled to be a finalist in such a huge grant, surrounded by individuals who are working to make Nashville a better city. We knew that if, by some amazing chance, we won this grant, that our program would be forever changed!

Guess what? WE WON!

$100,000 is a lot of money, and the good people at Oasis are ready to put it to great use. Our immediate plans include a renovation of the current Workshop space, which is in the basement of the Oasis Center’s building on Charlotte Pike. The space does not have a bathroom, plumbing, or sufficient heat and air, so this renovation is in great need.

Next, the Workshop is going mobile! We have been daydreaming about a mobile workshop since the Workshop’s conception two years ago- and this grant will make our dream a reality. We will be buying a vehicle for the workshop and turning it into a fully functional bike repair shop on wheels. This will allow us to travel throughout town, reaching many more people than we currently are able to.

It is a great day! Here is a video about the Workshop that was made for the grant proposal:

We are having a family reunion this Saturday and the shop will be closed for the day! We apologize if this causes any inconvenience. Halcyon will reopen Sunday October 24 at 12 noon!

Have a great Saturday- and if you want something fun to do, the Fly, TN Gran Fondo is tomorrow! It should be an awesome!

Woohoo! Thank you so much to everyone who voted in this year’s Best of Nashville poll by the Nashville Scene! We came in 2nd place as Best Bicycle Shop in the reader’s poll (congratulations to Eastside Cycles!) and were chosen as “Best Place to Tinker on a Bicycle” by the editors! Thank you to Steve Haruch for this awesome write up:

BEST PLACE TO TINKER ON A BICYCLE: HALCYON

So maybe you don’t have a greasy hunk of carbureted British steel in need of tuning up — there’s a workspace for you just the same. If your preferred mode of transport is of the less oil-intensive, leg-powered sort, Halcyon Bike Shop in 12South has a place for you to drop in, tune up and rock out. (Halcyon occasionally hosts rock shows, in addition to bike rides and movie nights.) Bring your own bike in to work on at one of their stations, browse the selection of great vintage rides, or even check out some records. Get crankin’! STEVE HARUCH
