NASHVILLE, Tenn. — September 26, 2013 — Oasis Center and Halcyon Bike Shop is inviting the community and members of the press to join us in celebrating the completion of Hudson Deiderich’s cross country bicycle ride, Bike America 2013, to raise funds and awareness for the Bike Workshop. The celebration will be held here at Halcyon Bike Shop, 1119 Halcyon Avenue, Nashville TN, 37204 on Friday, October 4th from 5pm-8pm.

During his many weeks on two wheels, Hudson covered more than 4000 miles of varied terrain including the Appalachian Mountain Range, The Smoky Mountains, farm valleys, flat prairies of the mid-west, the Rockies , the Grand Canyon, and on to the sunny beaches of California. The journey began in Charleston, SC on June 8th, 2013 and Hudson completed his ride on August 7th, 2013 in San Francisco, CA. Hudson had a stopover in Nashville in July that included sharing with youth at the Workshop to talk about how to prepare for long journey’s on a bicycle, what tools and supplies would be of most help and how to successfully plan for long rides.

Hudson’s motivation for the ride and spreading the word across the nation was his involvement with the Oasis Bike Workshop. Since 2009, the shop has worked with more than 500 young people to empower them through building of their own bike, gaining a skill set and pride in ownership, affordable transportation, and the challenge to get out onto the greenways in their neighborhoods. The BikeAmerica 2013 tour raised more than $4000 to support the ongoing work in the Bike Workshop.

The celebration will include a visual presentation of Hudson’s trip along with a narrative from Hudson talking about the challenges and adventures of his journey. There will be a special surprise recognition gift from the Oasis Center as well!

Founded in 1969, The Oasis Center provides nationally recognized services to help youth overcome barriers that prevent them from transitioning into healthy adulthood. These services include a residential crisis services program, a long term housing program to get youth off the street, education support, street outreach, individual and family counseling, and youth volunteer and leadership opportunities for young people. The Bike Workshop was founded in 2009 to give youth the opportunity to develop a skill, empowerment through ownership of something they’ve built, encourage exercise and the ability to explore the city of Nashville economically.

Thomas Solinsky at Sound Forrest has a full schedule of bike/beer events planned to round out the month of August.

This coming Monday, 15th, a group ride heads out of our parking lot at 6:45 for the beautiful, renovated, still crappy Greer Stadium. The Nashville Sounds take on the Las Vegas 51’s! If you’d like to go, email and she can get you a five dollar ticket!

This year a local neighborhood cyclist/ Bongo employee got into a severe bicycle accident resulting in a decent hospital stay and multiple surgeries. We want to help support this ride. We are going to raise money and hopefully this will become the first Annual Bongo Bicycle Parade and we can continue this ride and raise money for other causes. Join us Sunday August 21 3 P.M. starting at the Belcourt Theatre parking lot.

Hope to see you at both!
