As you probably know, the May flood was especially rough on the city’s Greenways, but thanks to the combined efforts of several groups and many volunteers, as well as city workers, Nashville’s pedestrian only Greenways are restored and reopen.

This Saturday, July 17, Mayor Dean host a ride/walk celebration of our beautiful greenways! From the Mayor’s office:

The bike ride and walk will start on the “hill” in Shelby Park (green star on map attached) next to the Cumberland River Bike/Ped bridge.  The 2-mile walk will be lead by Anne Davis and the 6-mile bike ride will be lead by Mayor Dean. Participants are encouraged to walk or ride to the event and to the start location.  All bike riders are encouraged to wear helmets. Vehicle parking is available at 2 locations:  Shelby Bottoms-Forrest Green Trail Head (off of Forrest Green Drive) , and Wave Country in Two Rivers Park.

WHO:             Karl Dean, Mayor of Metropolitan Government of Nashville
WHAT:           Celebrate Greenways post Flood of 2010
WHEN:           Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 8:00 AM
WHERE: Shelby Bottoms Park (next to Cumberland River Pedestrian Bridge)

Should be an awesome way to show our support for Nashville’s flood recovery and for the greenways!

Our friend Candice Burnside was diagnosed with cancer three months ago, and has been fighting the hard fight ever since. She is now recovering from a bilateral mastectomy, and on the road to being cancer free!

You may recognize Candice from Grimey’s Records, where she worked for three years, or if you attend shows in the Nashville rock scene (Candice is a dedicated music supporter). So, her many friends in Nashville’s music community are coming together for several benefit shows, and the first one is this Saturday May 29 at Exit/In. 100% of the donations raised will go to Candice in her time of need.

The lineup:

THE FEATURES
HOTPIPES
CORTNEY TIDWELL
and some awesome DJs to be announced

Doors will open at 8 p.m., the show is 18+, and admission is a suggested $15 donation.

There will also be a raffle, and I hear a bunch of local businesses have donated prizes (Local Honey, Mitchell’s Deli, Grimey’s, many more…), and do our part to help Candice, we have donated a gift certificate for a tune up. So come out, rock out, celebrate Candice and let’s kick this cancer way outta town!

Following the devastation of the Nashville Flood, there are many opportunities to volunteer and give back to those in need. Halcyon has two easy ways this weekend to participate in the rebuilding of our amazing city:

Flood Relief Drive

Saturday May 8th

11-7

Halcyon Bike Shop parking lot

This Saturday, Halcyon will host a relief drive to support those who have been so greatly impacted by the Nashville Flood. If you have items to donate, we would love to take them off your hands and get them to the victims in need. If you have been affected directly by the flood, please come down to the shop and take whatever items you need or want.

We will be accepting:

*Canned and dry food items

*Clothing (please, only NEW socks and underwear) and shoes

*Diapers, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, and toiletries

*Blankets, towels and linens

*BIKES! Many people lost their cars and bikes in the flood, and need transportation

Again, if you are a victim of the flood and are in any need of these items, please come down to the shop and take your pick! All remaining items will be donated through Hands on Nashville to help their relief efforts.

The next day, Sunday May 9th, Nashville’s Dead, Halcyon and Rockettown are partnering to bring you some good ol’ rock’n'roll relief.

No excuse y’all- our neighbors need us. To those who have been impacted by this disaster- we love ya, keep truckin’, and we want to help you.
