how to be awesome

January 4, 2013

As apart of our Monthly Artist Series we will be hosting Kelly Kerrigan the month of January and to celebrate, we are having an opening party Saturday January 5th starting at 6pm.

Here is the artist statement:

Kelly Kerrigan ****
I am a Nashville Native with a Theater/Art degree I received in 1996 from
Austin Peay State University.****

In the last 16 years, I have been a typical working Artist, which means
I’ve done lots of things to make money that didn’t really feed my
creativity, but paid my bills: I appeared on HGTV as an ‘Expert Crafter’
showing viewers how to decorate a bird house (groundbreaking, I know). I
have painted murals in homes, and backdrops for theaters. I painted dog
portraits for wacky pet owners, and dog portraits for normal pet owners.

From 2001-2003 I worked in a fashion-factory hand painting shoes 10-12
hours per day for designer boutiques, during which I did not paint anything
for myself. I had to get out of that creative vortex, so in October of
2003, I started making Lamps crafted from Vintage Womens Under-Garments. I
launched my website a few weeks after making a few lamps;
They became an international overnight phenomenon. It was crazy- for about
6 months, and then like all things that are viral on the Internet, life
returns to some type of normal. Yet Tramp Lamps still continues to find new
fans. Almost 10 years later, I have made over 900 lamps, and I still love
making them.

Pop culture nostalgia is the force behind my Paintings. Commercials, sour
candy, and 80s pop radio saturated my childhood, but I am enriched from it
as well. I might have watched too much TV as a kid, but I also played
outside well after twilight, got wet grass cuts under my pinky toes,
skinned my knees without wincing, and I could run barefoot on gravel really
fast. I took what I saw on the 3 channels we has access to and made my own
worlds with it in my big back yard of apple trees. I didn’t want to work on
the Muppet Show as someone who operated Fozzy Bear, I wanted to *Be* Fozzy

My Art should make you Laugh. I want you to think it is funny and well
executed. If a beautiful Aria makes you cry when you hear it, then allow my
art to evoke a giggle when you see it. This is my profession, this is what
I file on my taxes as my occupation. It is not a hobby.****
