The Bike Workshop is in high gear for the summer- we have greatly expanded our earn-a-bike program with Oasis Center from one day a week to five days a week! We are now reaching more kids than ever throughout Nashville, teaching them bike skills and helping them repair and earn a bike of their own. During June, we will have the Workshop at the Oasis Center Monday-Thursday, and in East Nashville on Fridays.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! Anyone with bike mechanical knowledge is in greatest need, but anyone is welcome to join! It is a lot of fun and you will learn a lot. Email Dan Furbish if you would like to help out!

Here is the June schedule, email us if you would like a copy or would like a preview of the July schedule (which will include a workshop at Sevier Park, down the street from the Shop!)

Here are some photos of our most recent Bike Workshop graduates! Every six weeks, we graduate a new group of students, who have worked diligently to repair their bikes, which are all donated used bicycles. The students earn their bikes, and the last class day is our celebratory bike ride and ice cream day!

Tomorrow, Saturday April 17th, the Halcyon Bike Workshop and Ride for Reading will be holding a bicycle donation drive at the Earth Day Festival at Centennial Park in Nashville. The drive will begin at 11am and go until 6pm!

Last year, we collected over 300 used bicycles to recycle and redistribute to underprivileged youth and Nashvillians who would not have been able to afford a bike otherwise. It is greatly important that we collect as many bikes as possible this year to ensure that our community programs, like the Bike Workshop, can continue and grow in 2010!

Bikes of all conditions will be accepted, as well as any used parts you have. If you cannot make it to Earth Day, you can drop any donation off at Halcyon Bike during regular business hours. All donations are tax deductible.

We will be sharing a tent with Walk/Bike Nashville, who are in the process of planning the Seventh Annual Tour de Nash, which will be held May 22. The Tour is the largest bike ride through Nashville, and it is a blast for all levels of riders and all ages! Registration will be set up, so please plan on attending this amazing event! All proceeds from Tour de Nash are redistributed into programs that serve Nashville’s cycling and pedestrian advocacy, including the Bike Workshop!

The Bike Workshop had a lovely write up in the Tennessean this week. The Workshop is a collaborative effort between Halcyon and the Oasis Center where we teach underprivileged youth bike mechanics and safety, and the participants earn a free used bike. It has been a big success so far, and the Workshop is celebrating its first birthday this month!

Last year, we had a hugely successful ‘bike-drive’ at the Earth Day celebrations at Centennial Park. We asked for any bicycle donations to go to the Workshop, and you responded with over 300 bikes! The bike-drive will happen again this year at the Earth Day event, again held at Centennial Park on Saturday April 17.

Check out the article, and thank you to the Tennessean for spreading the word on the Workshop!
